What do a plumber, engineer, machinist, school principal, probation officer, florist, carpenter, nursing home director, pastor, accountant, factory worker and students have in common? They all love hockey. These are just some of the occupations of the men who participate Friday nights between 10 - 11 p.m. in Elgin's Men's Ice Hockey Ministry.
We are currently averaging between 15 - 20 men each week. Although only 4 of us, who are regulars, call Elgin their church home, others are from other evangelical churches in the area. There is also a growing number who have no church connections.
Our hockey ministry has become intergenerational with players’ 16 year old sons joining in the fun on Friday nights. Our players range in age from 16 - 50 years old with the 50 year olds spending more time warming the benches, while the 16 year olds skate up and down the ice on the new RBC Pad.
Ice hockey takes place each Friday night from October through March with the highlight being the Cam Howie Hockey Tournament sponsored by Emmanuel Bible College.
Each year Elgin enters a team and we have a great deal of fun. We usually have a "gifted" team that fares reasonably well and the guys really seem to enjoy the fellowship.
